Open letter from former military commanders in support of access to responsible businesses offering reliable financial products and opportunities

We are writing to encourage your support for our men and women in uniform by ensuring their access to legitimate, reputable financial opportunities beyond those offered by the U.S. government.

Specifically, Trans World Assurance Company and American Fidelity Life Insurance Company have a long history of serving and supporting our military. Founded more than 45 years ago by WWII veteran Charles Woodbury, these companies served as a founding underwriter of the Servicemembers Group Life Insurance, (SGLI) which continues to provide insurance to our military families today.

The Woodbury family remains deeply involved in the business, dedicated to the mission of supporting our military personnel. Based on many years of experience, each of us considers Barbara Woodbury – daughter of these companies’ founder – to be a true patriot. In both her personal and professional endeavors, Barbara works tirelessly in support of our troops and their families, and we hold her in the highest regard.

Future First Universal Life by Trans World Assurance Emerges as a Clear Leader in the Military Market

Since its introduction in 2009 by Trans World Assurance, the Future First Universal Life Insurance policy has seized an overwhelming amount of the company's new business with a majority of that business coming from Military members. Agents of Trans World Assurance, many of whom are Military veterans, recognize the popularity of the Future First product and have also expressed their preference for it.

"The response that I've received from Military members in regards to Future First is exciting," said Peter Gilbertson, a long-time agent of Trans World Assurance. "As an Air Force veteran, I understand why they like this product so much. It was designed for them and addresses their needs as members of the Military."

When designing the Future First policy, Trans World Assurance consulted with a panel of agents, who were former military members, to determine how to best meet the specific needs of this highly complex and specialized market. The initial Future First Universal Life Insurance policy they created contained the following features:

  • No "war clause"
  • Portability allowing both career and short-term enlisted service members to take the policy with them wherever they go
  • Cash accumulation within the policy that grows tax deferred
  • Current rate of return that is very competitive along with a guaranteed minimum rate of return of 3%
  • Tax free access to cash values through policy loans
  • Income tax free death benefits for beneficiaries

Recognizing the quickly growing popularity of the product, executives at Trans World Assurance decided to further enhance the Future First policy making it even more appealing to the Military life insurance market. They've added the following features to the initial product:

  • Bonus interest rate of 6.5% for all policies reaching $100,000 in cash value
  • Charitable Benefit Rider provides an additional 1% death benefit above the base policy face amount without adding any additional cost to the policy. This allows Military members to support charities that they deem important, such as the USO or the Wounded Warrior Project.
  • Accelerated Benefit Rider provides enhanced security and access to funds if the insured becomes seriously ill.

"As a founding member and continuing underwriter of Serviceman's Group Life Insurance (SGLI), we realize that all servicemen already have some level of SGLI," stated a Trans World Assurance Executive. "But establishing an additional permanent plan while they are in the military helps provide a solid foundation as they transition to civilian life. We are excited about this product and the important need it fills for the families of those that serve our country."

40th Anniversary of Servicemen's Group Life Insurance (SGLI)

Trans World Assurance Co. proudly celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the Servicemen's Group Life Insurance (SGLI) program as one of its participating members.

Congress created SGLI in 1965 to address the needs of service members for life insurance during the Vietnam War. Unlike previous government life insurance programs administered by the federal government, SGLI is a group policy, purchased by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to provide coverage for service members who may have difficulty obtaining insurance due to risks associated with military service or because of service-connected disabilities.

Earl Bartlett, Chairman of Trans World's Board of Directors, states that "It is an honor for us to be one of the members of this partnership. It is one of the ways that we can give something back to those who have given so much to defend and protect our country. This is an example of how private industry and the government can work together to better serve our country."

Barbara Woodbury honored by United States Marine Corps with Sunset Parade

TWA Director, Barbara Woodbury, was the Guest of Honor at a Sunset Parade held at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. This ceremonial parade was hosted by the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps and Mrs. Estrada, who is a Marine in her own right.

The parade is a tradition that includes the renowned U. S. Marine Corps Band and the Corp's esteemed Silent Drill Team. This historic military ritual honors the patriotic spirit of all Americans and is one of the most popular summer events in our nation's capitol, as exemplified by the large crowd.

Also on hand to honor our enlisted Marines were: Attorney General and Mrs. Ashcroft; Congressman Cunningham; Governor Pete Wilson; Assistant Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable H.T. Johnson and Mrs. Johnson; Mrs. Pace, wife of Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, General Pete Pace; Mrs. Jones, wife of General James L. Jones, Supreme Allied Commander of Europe; the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, General Nyland; General and Mrs. Fulford, and many other distinguished Americans and heroes.

Ms. Woodbury, the daughter of two WWII Marines, was honored for the work she has done throughout the years for enlisted Marines and their family members. She remarked "...to be honored by those I consider to be the greatest heroes in the world today is overwhelming to me...” She went on to say, "I was born to the Corps. This honor ranks right up there with the night I became a Marine and the day I was born to two of the greatest Marines who ever lived." Marines have always been an inspiration to her. She smiled and said "do not tell Marines what can't be done. They will prove you wrong every time. Marines know what can be done....and they do it! It is their spirit and sense of fraternity that makes them unique and special Americans. It is what makes them 'no better friend, and no worse enemy'." She went on to say that she loves and admires her many, many friends in the other services, as well, but that they would understand that this was a night to honor our Marines, to honor our Corps.

We at TWA are proud of our men and women in uniform and all those who support them, most especially during this challenging war on terror. We stand united with our heroes, one and all.
