Trans World Assurance Offers College Planning Solutions and Scholarship Assistance

With rising education costs and with the recent poor performance of some traditional college savings plans, Trans World Assurance recognizes that families need help with developing a successful college funding plan now more than ever. For over 50 years, Trans World Assurance has helped families develop a plan by offering college planning solutions and scholarship assistance.

With the average cost of a 4-year degree from a public school at now over $50,000, the need for an effective college funding plan has escalated. Accumulating the cash needed to pay for college while offsetting college expenses by getting scholarships and maximizing financial aid is crucial for many families.

Early stage planning is essential in developing a successful college funding plan, and Trans World Assurance can assist families with their plans by offering valuable advice and tools. In an effort to better assist families with college planning, Trans World Assurance has added many college planning tools to its website, including the following:

  • Financial aid calculators
  • Expected Family Contribution (EFC) Worksheets
  • Articles on funding a college education
  • Links to valuable college planning websites
  • Blog articles related to college planning

In addition, Trans World Assurance agents can also offer families valuable advice and information about the types of plans available. Selecting the right college funding plan is critical, and with the recent poor performance of many traditional college savings plans, such as 529 plans and Coverdell plans, many families are looking for safer and more flexible college planning vehicles like life insurance.

A Whole Life or Universal Life insurance plan, like the ones offered by Trans World Assurance Company offer a variety of benefits:

  • Provides funding for college if a parent dies
  • Grows tax-deferred
  • Contribution is not limited
  • Guaranteed rate of return
  • Not subject to loss
  • Excluded from State financial need analysis allowing families to qualify for more financial aid
  • Funds may be used for things other than college

“The flexibility of a whole life insurance product with a tax deferred annuity is essential,” stated Patrick Collis, a college planning advisor and Trans World Assurance agent. “Take a traditional plan, like a 529 college savings plan. It offers tax deferred growth, but it can only be used for college and nothing else. Life insurance offers tax-deferred growth, but if a child gets a scholarship, the funds may be used for other things such as retirement, a home purchase, or almost anything else.”

With a Trans World Assurance life insurance plan, parents dedicate a specific amount to the life insurance policy, as little as $30 can start a plan. A portion of the money funds the life insurance benefit, but a majority of the money over time is directed to the cash accumulation side of the policy, which grows tax deferred. When a child is ready for college, parents withdraw money from the fund and pay for school with no adverse affect to their financial aid package.

Trans World Assurance’s Whole Life and Universal Life insurance plans have been approved by SAGE Scholars Tuition Rewards Program. This tuition scholarship program allows families to earn a guaranteed scholarship for up to one year of tuition at any of the 275+ participating colleges and universities nationwide.

Future First Universal Life by Trans World Assurance Emerges as a Clear Leader in the Military Market

Since its introduction in 2009 by Trans World Assurance, the Future First Universal Life Insurance policy has seized an overwhelming amount of the company's new business with a majority of that business coming from Military members. Agents of Trans World Assurance, many of whom are Military veterans, recognize the popularity of the Future First product and have also expressed their preference for it.

"The response that I've received from Military members in regards to Future First is exciting," said Peter Gilbertson, a long-time agent of Trans World Assurance. "As an Air Force veteran, I understand why they like this product so much. It was designed for them and addresses their needs as members of the Military."

When designing the Future First policy, Trans World Assurance consulted with a panel of agents, who were former military members, to determine how to best meet the specific needs of this highly complex and specialized market. The initial Future First Universal Life Insurance policy they created contained the following features:

  • No "war clause"
  • Portability allowing both career and short-term enlisted service members to take the policy with them wherever they go
  • Cash accumulation within the policy that grows tax deferred
  • Current rate of return that is very competitive along with a guaranteed minimum rate of return of 3%
  • Tax free access to cash values through policy loans
  • Income tax free death benefits for beneficiaries

Recognizing the quickly growing popularity of the product, executives at Trans World Assurance decided to further enhance the Future First policy making it even more appealing to the Military life insurance market. They've added the following features to the initial product:

  • Bonus interest rate of 6.5% for all policies reaching $100,000 in cash value
  • Charitable Benefit Rider provides an additional 1% death benefit above the base policy face amount without adding any additional cost to the policy. This allows Military members to support charities that they deem important, such as the USO or the Wounded Warrior Project.
  • Accelerated Benefit Rider provides enhanced security and access to funds if the insured becomes seriously ill.

"As a founding member and continuing underwriter of Serviceman's Group Life Insurance (SGLI), we realize that all servicemen already have some level of SGLI," stated a Trans World Assurance Executive. "But establishing an additional permanent plan while they are in the military helps provide a solid foundation as they transition to civilian life. We are excited about this product and the important need it fills for the families of those that serve our country."

Trans World Assurance Company Announces 2011 Interest Rate

One of the country’s top private insurers of military personnel, small groups and municipalities, Trans World Assurance proudly announces its 2011 interest rates. Both the Accumulation Fund as well as the Future First Universal Life Policy will each receive 5%. For the Accumulation Fund, this represents a 10.21% average over the last 32 years.
